Theme
The theme “Being and becoming musical in a posthuman era” explores how our relationship with music evolves as technology increasingly blurs the boundaries between human and machine. This multifaceted concept invites educators, scholars, and artists to reconsider the very essence of musicality in a world where human capabilities are augmented and intertwined with advanced technologies. As artificial intelligence becomes an active collaborator in composition and performance, we face critical ethical questions about authorship, creativity, and the nature of musical expression. Educational institutions must adapt, preparing students for a landscape where traditional skills merge seamlessly with digital literacy and AI collaboration. Beyond creation and education, this paradigm shift opens new frontiers in health and wellbeing, from innovative music therapies to the potential neurological impacts of direct neural interfaces for musical perception. The theme also underscores the imperative of decolonisation, urging us to ensure equitable access to posthuman musical technologies and the representation of diverse cultural traditions, thus avoiding the perpetuation of historical imbalances. As we embrace the exciting possibilities of digital music creation, we must also grapple with sustainability, balancing technological advancement with environmental stewardship. “Being and becoming musical in a posthuman era” calls on us to critically examine how we can harness the creative potential of posthuman musicality while addressing ethical dilemmas, fostering inclusivity, safeguarding human wellbeing, and ensuring a sustainable future for musical expression and education.

Presentation Types
1. Spoken Papers
Spoken Papers will be allocated 30 minutes, consisting of no more than 20 minutes for the presentation and a maximum of 5 minutes for questions and discussion (with 5 minutes for the next presenter to prepare and for delegates to move to the next session).
2. Posters
Poster specifications (size, format, etc.) will be provided upon acceptance. Posters will be grouped into sessions that have designated timeslots.
3. Symposia
Individuals may present proposals for symposia of 3-6 persons on topics related to the symposium theme. Panel discussions are 60 minutes long, and must include time for audience questions. All panel members must register for APSMER.
4. Workshops
Workshops will be allocated 30 minutes. Preference will be given to presentations that clearly demonstrate the translation of research into practical teaching and learning strategies for educators. Workshop abstracts will appear in the Conference Program.

Conditions
- The online submission system must be used.
- All submissions and presentations must be in English.
- To be included in the published program, all presenting authors accepted for the presentation must be registered to attend by 31 March 2025.
- All submissions must follow the instructions provided in the Call for Papers on the APSMER website.
- The amount of time allocated to each type of session is indicated above. Please plan for a submission that will fit the appropriate time frame.
- Submissions that are not presented in the required formats will not be considered.
Submission Review
All applicants are required to submit an abstract (300-400 words) for review. Every submission will be reviewed by the APSMER academic committee in a double-blind review process. All accepted abstracts will be publicly available on the APSMER website.
Multiple Submission Policy
An individual can be named as an author on a maximum of TWO submissions across all categories of presentations. Depending on the number of submissions, the Conference Organisers reserve the right to further limit the number of presentations accepted for any individual.
Abstract for Peer Review
All applicants have to submit an abstract that conforms to the guidelines below.
- Abstracts must be in English with the text between 300 and 400 words in length (excluding title and author information).
- The abstract should include the following 5 items in one paragraph of written prose:
- theoretical/pedagogical background of the paper
- aim/focus of the work/research reported
- method/approach of the work
- results and/or summary of the main findings
- conclusions and implications for music education.
- The abstract should not include references.
